Osmoflo, with the support of its joint venture partner CCB Envico, is proud to announce the successful achievement of the first major milestone for the South Tarawa Water Supply Project (“STWSP”) in Kiribati, being the delivery of first water from the recently commissioned ‘McKenzie’ seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO) plant into South Tarawa’s drinking water distribution system.
This significant achievement marks a critical step forward in addressing the region's long-standing water scarcity issues, providing ongoing access to sustainable, reliable and high-quality potable water for the local community.
Alongside the Public Utilities Board of Kiribati (PUB), Osmoflo and CCBE have built a strong relationship with the local community of South Tarawa over the past 3 years. On January 14th, following a rigorous commissioning process, the distribution pumps were activated and the plant commenced delivering potable water into PUB’s transmission lines to meet the utility’s first water order of around 1 million Litres / Day (MLD).
Following a short Performance Trial during which time the plant will continue to be fine-tuned, and tested under a range of operating conditions, Osmoflo will commence a multi-year operational phase that includes provision of on-site operational personnel utilising locally employed plant operators, as well as remote operational support of the plant via continuous monitoring by Osmoflo’s 24/7 Control Centre located at its global headquarters in Adelaide, South Australia.
Kiribati is home to a population of over 50,000 people, which has faced severe challenges in recent years in securing a reliable and sustainable water supply due to its geographical location and limited freshwater resources. This plant, which employs cutting-edge desalination technology, is designed to meet the immediate and long-term water needs of the nation.
The CCB Envico & Osmoflo joint venture was engaged by PUB and its funding partners of:
- Asian Development Bank
- World Bank
- Global Environment Facility
- Green Climate Fund
- Government of Kiribati
…to deliver a multi-faceted project to address water shortages across the entirety of South Tarawa, which will ultimately include a second plant of similar capacity at the location of Betio.
With this first milestone, Osmoflo has demonstrated its commitment and will continue to support ongoing efforts to increase sustainable water production, enhance infrastructure, build skills and capacity in the local community, and improve water accessibility for the entire nation.
