Reverse osmosis combined with various pre-treatment technologies
Cooper Basin, SA/Qld
Challenge The Cooper Basin, a remote area near the SA, Qld borders may be rich in oil and gas, however the local ground water, the only source available, is not only saline, but it is heavily contaminated with hydrocarbons. In addition, it has extreme temperature variations ranging from 90 degrees Celsius to near freezing. Extensive treatment is thus required before Santos can use the groundwater for process and drinking needs at its Moomba, Ballera, Jackson & Tarbut fields.
Solution Osmoflo was commissioned to deliver a comprehensive treatment solution following good results over a number of years with an Osmoflo desalination plant providing drinking water. The plant design had to overcome a number of site-specific challenges for pre-treatment before reverse osmosis. All plants deliver water for drinking purposes with two providing high purity water for boiler feed. Osmoflo technicians fly to the Cooper Basin on a regular basis to undertake preventative maintenance, complementing Osmoflo's proprietary PlantConnect around the clock remote operations and monitoring system.
Result Santos now has a secure, reliable source of water to maintain its Cooper Basin operations. Osmoflo has supplied and operates the plants under an all risk operation and maintenance agreement where it assumes responsibility for efficient operation, quality and delivery as required. This arrangement allows Santos to focus on core activities.Santos is a leading Australian oil and gas exploration and production company. The company supplies over 20% of eastern Australia's domestic gas and produced 54.4 million barrels of oil equivalent in 2008.
