Challenge SHI was responsible for the design and construction of the Central Processing Facility (CPF) for the Ichthys LNG project.
The CPF platform, permanently moored some 250km off the coast of Broome in Western Australia, is required to use sea water as the source for all its potable and process needs. The main challenges that Osmoflo faced in this project were the confined, limited space and hazardous environment, with the demanding delivery timeline of the WTP also being critical to the progress of topside build. Additionally, the quantity and depth of engineering specifications that applied to this project had not been experienced before.
Solution A duty/standby 2 x 100 m3/day custom engineered water treatment plant was provided, incorporating chem dosing, multimedia filtration, 5um and activated carbon cartridge filtration, seawater and brackish reverse osmosis, followed by calcite remineralisation. The plant also includes a UV steriliser to produce potable water from the remineralised service water, as well as an NRMB polishing unit to produce demin water from RO permeate when required.
The plant, designed and built in Adelaide South Australia, was exported to South Korea where it was installed and commissioned on the CPF platform in the SHI’s shipyard. Osmoflo provided supervisory assistance for the installation and completed in-port process commissioning. Once complete, the CPF was towed to its final location at the undersea Ichthys Gas Field offshore from WA, where it will be permanently moored for the 40 year life of this LNG project. During the sailing Osmoflo Engineers were present on board for extended commissioning activities and training of CPF’s operators.
Result A bespoke plant was engineered and built in full compliance with strict project specifications, with minimal footprint, height and weight to fit within confined space on the CPF, and all delivered on time. Company processes were developed around project engineering, procurement and fabrication requirements with quality control processes implemented to ensure a successful and timely project outcome for this and similar future projects.
