With the application of automation and remote management of critical operating parameters using PlantConnect, Osmoflo has been able to operate this plant on a sustained basis at 80% recovery instead of its design of 60%. This provides significant benefits to our client without any cost impact.

Challenge The process to extract rare earths at the Mt Weld mine requires water of a higher quality than is available from local aquifers. The water contains high levels of silica and the limited aquifer capacity required a treatment plant that could operate at high recovery levels. Because of the costs associated with operating in such a remote location, unmanned operation backed up by remote control was also a preferred option.

Solution Osmoflo offered a Build Own Operate contract along with a technology solution comprising a combination of off the shelf reverse osmosis technology coupled with innovative design features. The process includes multimedia, filtration, microfiltration and reverse osmosis with reject water going to evaporation ponds.

Result Commissioned in 2011, the 4ML/d plant is producing water for process requirements at nearly 80% recovery. Osmoflo’s proprietary PlantConnect® remote monitoring system in combination with supervisory technology enables full remote control of plant operation.
